Happy Birthday

...to me blog!

So its been a whole year since I started this otiose atrocity, and I do believe we need a celebration. I'll give you a second to go find your party hat.

OK! So things that are new with me:

I am one year wiser, and when I say 'wiser' I mean I have more gray hair. That's pretty exciting.

I have two amazing kids. That I think are amazing even though all they do is eat, poop, cry, and poop. Somehow that merits me loving the dickens out of them? (I'm fuzzy on the logic/science behind that, but goodness knows its true.)

My babies' momma is now a full-time stay-at-home mom, and a fabulous one at that.

I only have a few days left of nursing school.

Lets see... I have three 12" sub woofers in my living room that haven't been utilized in the last six weeks and its starting to bother me. :( sad faces ): I'm told babies have sensitive hearing; I say they need an early acquaintance with loud music. I never win this disagreement.

Aaaaaand.... that's about it. I'm a simple man, what can I say.

Now the exciting stuff! We here at Otiöse Morosity found it most advisable to implement some groundbreaking upgrades! (Upgrades so exciting and noteworthy that Steve Jobs should be introducing them.)

These include and are limited to:

A 'Popular Posts' section at the bottom of the page for those days when you're feeling like a stroll down memory lane of the best of times we've had together.

A 'neat' check box on each new post. For those numerous occasions that you're so moved by the incredible incredibility of a particular blog that you are left with a loss for words to describe your pleasure. (Excepting the word "neat" of course.) Its kind of similar to "liking" things on the facebook ...only neater.

I've also reduced the number of posts per page for ultra-super-mega fast page loads, and to allow quicker access to the popular posts feature at the bottom, which I'm certain will be put to constant use. Constant.

A new subtitle to the blog. This was necessary because the reference to my custodian friend is no longer applicable, and because I think that subtitles that include clever oxymorons increase the credibility of my extreme coolness.

And lastly, (what I'm most excited about) the use of SoundCloud to embed my invasive music!!! Now I don't have to deal with low-fi youtubes where the videos were constantly being removed or dropped, thus dinking with the flow of the playlist (a peeve of my pet).

So without further todo, I leave you with some substantial electronic beats (featuring artists like such as: Aphex Twin, Siriusmo, Pantyraid, and Eskmo) mixed by yours truly*. These beats go deep, so if you haven't invested in some form of subwoofing adequate to appreciate them, now is the time.

So come, let us celebrate.

RAVIN'

Just thought you may need to have a serious rave in your living room.

Right now.

I have been listening to too much hyperdub lately and this is what you get for it. Two items here:

1. RUSKO:

I stumbled across him over at Onlypieces.com and instantly loved this little diddy "everyday." Its so dang chipper and catchy. Its undeniable, should you choose not to deny it. And thus my sharing it. So, please, have some enjoyment of it.

2. SKRILLEX

No that's not Corey Feldman gone metal. It is LA's own Sonny Moore. Meet this kid on the street and you'd probably be inclined to request he pull up his pants, listen to his beats and you'll approve of his pants being worn in whatever fashion he sees fit. Even if you agree with the majority of humanity that this music is "...just too much ...something," and you refuse to take a serious listen then I'll take the liberty to inform you that this kid is talented.
My eldest of brothers told me to look into him, that I would pry think he's neat. Neat he is. His style of music is some kind of dark/awesome/strange/hilarious/epic. And if you have the amperage to crank up some of his more intense stuff (yes, this is his tamer stuff), you'll swear your house is being attacked by transformers. Just try it.

you take the blue pill...

Here we have some more blues music. Not that it falls into the genre of blues, obviously, but it can trigger the blues and is thus well suited for gray skies and lazy afternoons. These particular tracks are soft, slow, and altogether unoffensive to the aural palate. I don't know what has happened to me in my old age, but I'm all about easy listening. It creeps me out a little. Perhaps I don't have the mental energy to rock out anymore, or maybe I am just growing sentimental in my old age. Either way most of the angst of my younger years has cleared up along with my complexion, so I really have a minimal appetite for rockin rock music. I think the last rock song I purchased was Black Rain by Soundgarden last August. I will admit to my shame, however, that I do still pull out some of the occasional hippity hop that just may include some rap. Most of my friends and family are ready for me to grow out of that phase. I kind of am as well, but I'm still a sucker for dope beats, MC'd or otherwise.

ANYWAY- I have provided a spectacular yet dour picture for which to gaze upon as you sulk in these tunes. I love this photo because: it was obviously taken in flight, it looks like it could be Kansas, and this winter morning is just beautiful (look at all those frosted trees!)

BUT WAIT!

I don't want you to think that I mope around all day longing for the past just because I listen to mellow tunes. And you probably think, "this is the most depressing website in all of cyberspace, it always leaves me feeling like I'm in a Cymbalta commercial." To which I say fine, fine, I have included an alternative playlist of the funkier persuasion. Therefore, should you feel so inclined, you have my permission to pause the above video and play the one below. I can then assure you that within minutes you will be up dancing about your livingroom/bathroom/office or any other whereabouts you may be occupying.

Fresh beats?

Rest assured, they've never been pickled.

Isn't this just what your face was longing for? Some more intrusive music and disturbed cover art to match?? Well, I'm glad to deliver.

I chanced upon this artist Tokimonsta and was surprised (shocked even) to find out its a lady. These beats don't sound feminine, but apparently I stand corrected. Nay, impressed. AND she has great taste in cover art; I don't know why, but this high beaming robo-DJ from India offering Extra Strength Tylenol pleases me.

Another bonus: This playlist is relatively short, so you may just have the endurance to get through the entirety of its whopping twenty-four minutes, but I won't get my skivvies in a twist if you can't make it without biting. Nonetheless, I assure you these tunes prove great for the chilling, or for the relaxing, and possibly for the interpretive dancing. (Chillaxing, however, is strictly contraindicated.)

Ninjoy!

Scrumdiddlyumptious

Pogo is amazing.

If you recall from my December playlist you didn’t listen to, I put a pogo song called “Wishery” on it with a bunch of snippets from Disney’s Snow White. I didn’t even realize what the samples were from until Bethany told me it was Snow White. But anyway, I’ve been steadily listening to more and more of Pogo’s material primarily because his synth-wave base lines are so awesome; but when I came across his website, I came to realize that he’s not just a lowly DJ, but actually a VJ, and a prodigious one at that. (That is: Video Jockey, for my less electronically inclined audience.) Some videos are less eventful than others, but most of them make me laugh at some point or on some level; the music is also surprisingly relaxing for being so chopped and glitched. I don’t spect all’y’all to be down with the … irregularity of the videos, but you should at least try listening to some of these ill jams and dope jellies.

Thank you for your interest and unagreed upon commitment to this.

Evolution's stock is still going down. (Nonetheless, experts say: buy buy buy!)

I'll periodically check a random science news site and occasionally come across an interesting article or photo. And, man, this article really tickled me, so I have to share. You can read it here (its short and A.D.D. friendly for readers like me) or I can just sum it up:
A couple scientists pointed out the tremendous difficulty for the evolutionary step of going from a prokaryotic ("simple" bacteria-like) cell to a significantly more complex eukaryotic cell (the kind in plants, animals, and other advanced biological systems such as myself). What makes these cells so much more complex is about 200,000 times the genes within the nucleus. This information is what is responsible for the cell making things like mitochondria, its own power generators (not to be confused with power converters on Tatooine). These power generators are responsible for creating the energy necessary for these complex cells to sustain themselves. Bacteria cells are simple and resilient, not requiring much energy to survive, unlike the eukaryotic cells, which require much much more. The article states:
"The problem is, getting mitochondria requires more than just one cell juggling its genes. It's one cell swallowing up an entirely new cell. There are cells which do this, but they are eukaryotes, not bacteria. So in order to become a eukaryotic cell, a bacteria has to . . . do things that almost only happen in eukaryotic cells. Although it's clearly not impossible, it's one more blow to the idea of complex life evolving on alien worlds, especially those much younger than the earth."

Jeepers, I'm all torn up about the decreased possibility of aliens, really I am. I loved K-Pax.

Can you believe that's all they apply this information to? "Hmmm it seems like evolution becomes more unlikely as we further understand the world around us, but evolution is popular and thus true. [cue high fives] Therefore, it stands that we plum lucked out, contrary to the aliens that are, sorry to say, scientifically unlikely."

I must say: I find it amazing that people are sooo ready and willing to believe in aliens, (which are statistically more improbable than ourselves, and for which we have never had any proof or rational reason to believe in), but when given substantial evidence for a Creator, they're convinced that He is a childish imagination. (Professing to be wise...)

Furthermore, if you'd like an advanced lesson in overt ignorance and chicanery, please go on and read the comments under the article. C'mon people.

There was yet another article here that shows evidence that Antarctica was once a rain forest.
"I mean no disrespect, Mr. Sciencepants, but I already knew this. How did I know, you ask? Well, its in Genesis, it starts with an 'F' and it ends with your rejection."

Totally Tubular!

I am probably the last twenty-something male in the U.S. to have heard the big news, but it has come to my attention that they are in the works of producing a new live-action recreation of the one and only 80's franchise closest to my childhood heart:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
.

When I read the news I was reminded of that butterflies-in-the-stomach excited sensation I had one Saturday morning when I first saw the preview for the original big-screen TMNT movie. To this day every time I watch a film or trailer that begins with the "new line cinema" logo I instinctively have that reaction. Don't get me wrong, I know this movie (if they actually follow through with making it) will be a let down of sorts, but that doesn't stop my anticipation that this may finally be the film that portrays the long-overdue badassitude they originally exemplified.

AND, I would very much appreciate it if they put me in charge of the soundtrack this time around.

Go ninja go ninja go!
